School Interview: Liberty High School PDF Print E-mail

Liberty High School offers adults the opportunity to earn a high school diploma at their own pace. Their Distance Learning program includes 32 courses designed exclusively for home study and offers the highest standards of quality education, drawing upon their 20 years of experience. It is located on the internet at http://www.libertyhighschool.us. The interview below was conducted in July 2007.

=====

1. Can you give us a general introduction to your school?

Liberty High School is a fully approved school that focuses on students, eighteen years of age and older, who have, for whatever reason, failed to complete their high school education. We have over 32 course offerings, and offer our program to online students as was as the more traditional correspondence program. Liberty encourages students to remain in the traditional school setting, but if that was not possible, then we are ready with a high-quality program to help the student complete their high school education. We are approved by the Vermont State Board of Education and follow their rigorous curriculum requirements.

2. Who is your typical student?

Students who are no longer able to attend their local school because of age. Our students range in age from 18 to 80 and, in general, come from the large cities, but we do have many students from the rural parts of America as well. Typically, our students lack, on average, eleven credits toward the twenty needed for a Liberty High School diploma. Because signing with Liberty is voluntary, our students are motivated and, through our surveys, need the diploma for job placement or to continue with postsecondary education. That would include carer school and college.

3. What makes your school unique?

We have a dedicated staff available to answer all questions. We require, in several of our courses, that the student write their answers instead of filling in ABCD boxes. We consider practice in parts of speech and grammar to be invaluable, especially for students who have left the formal school environment. We have the usual features such as no interest payment plans, but we offer the personal touch and quite often develop good personal relations with our students.

4. Why should a student choose your school?

For the reasons listed above, but moreso because we take a personal stake in the future of our students. We assist our students with the enrollment process at postsecondary schools. Often our typical student is somewhat nervous about the college application. Our student services department will guide him/her through the process.

5. Anything else you would like to share?

We do have a fair number of students who are in high school now, but need make-up courses. Since we are an approved school, others schools around the country usually will give credit for Liberty High School courses. In this case, the student does not need to be eighteen years of age.
