What can you tell us about the history of Kaplan College Preparatory School?

In 2001, Sagemont School, a leading nonsectarian K–12 college preparatory school in South Florida, launched an online program that grew into the Sagemont Virtual School.  In support of the virtual school, the curriculum publishing company, Virtual Sage, was also founded in 2001. Virtual Sage specialized in developing stand-alone online courses that were comprehensive in scope.

In 2004, Sagemont Virtual School took advantage of a professional relationship with the University of Miami, and officially changed its name to the University of Miami Online High School (UMOHS).  In April 2007, the Iowa College Acquisition Corporation, d/b/a Kaplan Virtual Education, acquired Virtual Sage and UMOHS, thus launching Kaplan’s online K–12 education.   In April 2008, to align with its new position as the private college preparatory high school of the Kaplan family of companies, University of Miami Online High School was renamed Kaplan College Preparatory School (KCPS ).

Who would you say your typical student might be? What type of student seems to be more successful in your school?  

The KCPS student body includes students who want a college preparatory high school education which will prepare them for the next step in their education. The range of students includes athletes, performers, students who travel, students who benefit from individualized instruction or who want to accelerate, international students seeking an American high school diploma, part-time students, as well as students who are just looking for an alternative method of going to school. 

The college-preparatory curriculum, AP and honors courses, teachers, Academic Advisors, and college counseling programs have all been developed with the goal of helping our graduates get into top-tier, competitive universities.  Students who are striving for getting into these top-tier universities are the students most likely to be successful in our rigorous program.

What is the one thing that students should know about your program?

Kaplan College Preparatory School (KCPS) is a private, online high school specializing in college preparatory education for students in grades 8–12. Programs are individually designed to support student’s specific goals through a menu of more than 75 courses, including a full range of core curriculum, honors and advanced placement classes.

Students aspiring to attend a top-tier, competitive university benefit from our rich and demanding curriculum, one-on-one instruction, dedicated Academic Advisors, College Counselors, and full technical support. Through KCPS, students are able to gain an elite, private-school education with the flexibility of learning virtually anywhere, at any time.

In April 2007, UMOHS was acquired by Kaplan Virtual Education (KVE). KVE is a business unit of Kaplan Higher Education, and a subsidiary of Kaplan, Inc.., a worldwide leader in education. By joining the Kaplan family, UMOHS gained an even greater capacity to serve students through an expanded menu of Kaplan education programs.

In April 2008, University of Miami Online High School was renamed Kaplan College Preparatory School (KCPS).  At KCPS, our quest for excellence is reflected in our staff of dedicated Advisors and certified Instructors; in our curriculum, which allows students to pursue knowledge across a range of intellectual disciplines; and in our thriving students, who continue on to some of the most sought-after and competitive universities in the world.

What changes can students expect with this name change and new affiliation?
