Online high schools for gifted students PDF Print E-mail
Having a child who is gifted can be a joy and a curse. It is a joy because, if done correctly, you have a child with a thirst for knowledge. However, the curse can be that it can be difficult to keep gifted students focused on things which do not hold an interest for them. How do you keep gifted children interested in the tasks ahead?

This can be challenging because, and rightly so, public schools are usually not geared toward educating gifted children. Those children, if truly gifted, are a tiny percentage of any student body. Some schools respond to this by offering programs for gifted students or by having specific schools for gifted students. Both are reasonable responses. However, for the parent of gifted children, you might want to explore what else is out there.

There are two online high schools which focus specifically on gifted students. While the schools are certainly not for everyone and your child will need to meet specific entrance requirements, they are both outstanding choices.

Laureate School for the Gifted and Talented is a new option from the well-known and highly popular Laurel Springs School. Laurel Springs has made a name for itself as the school of choice for children with adult aspirations. The school has more than its fair share of up-and-coming actors, athletes, and other performers. Laureate School is a logical extension of their previous efforts.

Education Program for Gifted Youth at Stanford University is the program with the highest profile and has quickly established itself as the leader in online high school education for gifted high school students. The program is not without its problems; it is small and admits few students. However, for those who get in, there is the possibility of working with world-class faculty.

Unlike most online high schools, not all students are accepted. Here is the reality: Just because you believe your child is gifted does not make it so. True programs for the gifted assess that special ability to determine if your child would be a good fit and would have the potential for success. If it is not a good fit, it could be a huge disaster both for you and for your child.
