Online School Suggestions? 2008/02/28 01:50 Karma: 0
I'm new to this, and am rather overwhelmed by the amount of online high schools out there, thought I'd ask for suggestions.

Last year my 15 year old daughter was a stellar, honor roll student in a gifted I.B. program. She essentially completed her freshman year in 8th grade. Her Isat scores averaged 97%.

She began her freshman year enrolled in a rigorous I.B. high school program within our local public high school. After a couple of weeks, she informed me that she is not as smart as everyone thinks and begged me to allow her to drop down to double honors. The school was adamantly against this, to the point where I had to threaten to hire an attorney!

Well, apparently the pressure of this intense program wasn't the problem, as she is currently failing the same classes that she received A's in last year! I must mention that she does have a diagnosis of ADHD, and yes she is on medication.

She has conceded to attend an online high school. I am a single mom making enough to support my kids, though not near enough to afford more than 2-300/mo for her schooling. Can any one recommend an affordable (accredited) online high school for a child such as mine! Also... I just ordered the book "Online High Schools", but still think I may need some advice! Thanks!

You have a couple of issues here:

1. Cost of online education. The first thing I would do is check to see if you county or state has online charter high schools as an option. Some states do and others do not. This would be free. Failing that, I would take a look at some of the cheaper online schools on this site like Penn Foster High School. The entire program is about $1300, I believe, and they accept payments. There are other choices. Take a look.

2. Overall ability to be successful with an online high school. This is a difficult one because she has struggled elsewhere perhaps due to ADHD and other issues. Typically, online high schooling requires more dedication and not less. Whether she could be successful needs to be evaluated carefully.

Questions?
