I am considering having my 2 teenage sons "go" to MUH next year and want to know if there are any other options I should seriously consider. Of concern are:

1) Cost--can't be $12K a year, preferably less than $3K.

2) Needs to accept transfer credits from three years of public high school and require 3 year long classes minimum for graduation. I have a senior next year who only needs 4 block semester classes in our state but he'll be dual enrolling in college.

3) Needs to be accredited and have a good reputation at good colleges.

4) Needs to have AP courses and Latin available.

5) Needs to have a few asynchronous options. For example, MUH's AP courses are by semester but everything else is self-paced.

I'm not sure if I missed anything else. It seems to me that MUH has all of the above but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything that might be better or less expensive. It's hard because no homeschoolers in my area (Piedmont of NC) use this program and I don't have anyone knowledgable to bounce my ideas off. It seems pretty good but I want to make sure.

Thanks,
Ann

If you are thinking of Missouri University High School (University of Missouri High School), you have found an excellent programs. I regularly hear good things and not-so-good things about many of the schools listed here. I have never heard anything derogatory about MUH.

However, and this is important, this program is not for everyone. There are students who could be successful in the more commercial programs who would crash-and-burn in a program like this one.

However, it sounds like you have thought this through very carefully. I have written elsewhere that I like the university-based programs a great deal. One of the reasons is that it appears college admissions folks look upon them favorably.

No guarantees, of course, but I would say you have made a good choice.

Thanks Tom. Could you tell me why some students might crash and burn on this one. A little too rigorous, less hand holding? I'm familiar with the program as I've taken college level math courses and was very pleased with the program. I just want to make sure I'm not over looking anything.

Thanks,
Ann

I think the rigor - the expectations - are higher at MU High School than atbsome other types of programs that are more commercial.

However, if your sons are college-bound, I think it can be an excellent choice. One reason I believe so is because of their dual enrollment option if that is of interest.

I think the combination of cost, flexibility, rigor, and reputation make it one of the better choices out there.
