Online High

Kentucky has one and only one online high school. Kentucky Virtual High School does not offer a diploma program, but does offer Advanced Placement, credit recovery, GATE, and foreign language courses.

Basehor-Linwood Virtual School was the first virtual school in the state of Kansas and opened in 1998.
Lawrence Virtual School is a part of the Lawrence Unified School District. The focus is on preparation for college.

Smoky Valley Virtual Charter School has a focus on providing quality education comparable to their brick-and-mortar schools, but with flexible scheduling.

Turner Virtual Learning Center is located in Kansas City.

Turning Point Learning Center is part of the Emporia Public Schools.

Iowa has a total of two online high schools. The first, Iowa Learning Online, provides students with the opportunity to take courses that would otherwise not be available. This is similar to the second, Iowa Online AP Academy provides Advanced Placement courses to small school districts and rural settings.

Hoosier Academy-Indianapolis is due to open in the fall of 2008. It will begin as a K-10 school and move to expand to K-12.

For now, Illinois boasts only one free online high school. Chicago Virtual Charter School is currently available for students in grades K-10. This is common that schools will start with not all of the grades and work toward adding more. The school uses the curriculum of K12.com.

Idaho is a small state with big offerings of free online high schools. It has seven, some that are part of national companies and others that are more local. They include:

Idaho Digital Learning Academy is sponsored by the Idaho State Department of Education.

Idaho Distance Education Academy’s primary focus is working with the home educator.

Idaho Virtual Academy is part of the K12.com family of online schools.

Inspire: Idaho Connections Academy is yet another iteration of the Connections Academy group of schools.

iSucceed Virtual High School is one of the Insight Schools owned by the same folks who own the University of Phoenix.

Richard McKenna Charter High School is a public charter school.

Georgia Virtual School is part of the K12.com chain of online high schools. It offers a complete diploma program for online high school students.

Now we come to Florida. Florida has three free online high schools.

Florida Virtual School is the largest, according to certain reports, in the United States. Part of that has to do with being available long before many of these other options. Florida Virtual School also provides curriculum to other online high schools.

Florida Virtual Academy is part of the K12.com family of online high schools and uses the K12.com curriculum.

Florida Connections Academy is another of the Connections Academy schools. Many schools and seemingly increasing exponentially.

As of April 2008, there is only one free online high school available in Connecticut. CT Virtual Learning offers supplemental courses for free online and is a program of the State of Connecticut. It does not offer a diploma track and is for courses in addition to those being taken at your traditional high school.

Colorado offers five online high schools; two private schools and a public one. Thankfully for the students of Colorado, all are good choices. You really cannot go wrong no matter which direction you head.

Colorado Connections Academy is part of the Connections Academy family of schools. As the CA system grows, it becomes a better and better choice.

Denver Public School Online, or DPS Online, is part of the public school system in Colorado and is open to all students in that state.

Colorado Virtual Academy is one of the K12.com schools, an early creator of curriculum for online high schools.

Karval Online Education is a public online high school in Colorado.

Monte Vista On Line Academy is a public online high school in Colorado.
